As Stuart Nicholson noted in his “London Calling” column (Jazzit No. 33), it is still widely believed among American and international critics and musicians that true jazz is made in the United States—or more precisely, New York—and nowhere else. So, what does an American musician think when encountering one of Italy’s most prestigious jazz schools, with an educational approach and musical philosophy substantially different from those prevalent in the U.S.?
