Italy’s First Jazz Degree
17 December 2012 | Press & Media
Despite the difficult times in Italy and Europe, there is good news: Siena has launched Italy’s first “Free University of Jazz.” This is an important recognition, not only for Siena Jazz—which for over thirty years has represented the pinnacle of jazz education in Europe—but also for music as a whole, particularly those forms in Italy that have historically received insufficient attention and have often been relegated to niche status.
It is a positive sign, especially given the ongoing challenge of recognizing all contemporary cultures as equally valuable, challenging the long-standing assumptions of cultural hierarchies.
