An Italian Renaissance

DownBeat, considered the worldwide “bible” of jazz and founded in the 1930s, remains the most authoritative and widely read jazz magazine in the world. In the summer of 2011, journalist James Hale visited the Siena Jazz Summer Seminars. In the issue released in January 2012, Siena Jazz was featured on the cover with the headline: “Italian-Style Jazz Summer Camp.”
Inside, a stunning photo by Caterina Di Perri of Lionel Loueke and Miguel Zenón graced the first page of the supplement dedicated to jazz schools. The supplement opened with three full pages on Siena Jazz, including an extensive interview with President Franco Caroni and comments from the many international students who participated in the 2011 courses.
The subtitle of the feature proclaimed “An Italian Renaissance,” highlighting the uniqueness of the Siena Jazz experience both within Italy and on the international stage.
