The 52nd edition of the Siena Jazz International Summer Workshop is the ideal environment for making music, sharing experience, comparing personal musical languages and harmonizing the cultures of diverse countries. Students from all five continents have for years now gathered at the Siena Jazz Seminars and have discovered their affinities while getting to know each other, playing music together, sharing their passion and love for jazz.

General information on the courses

Enrolment opens on February 24* and will continue until each class is filled:

  • 12 voice students;
  • 12 students for trumpet/trombone;
  • 12 students for piano;
  • 12 students for guitar;
  • 12 students for drums;
  • 12 students for double bass and electric bass;
  • 12 students for tenor, alto sax and soprano sax;
  • 6 students for other instruments to be placed within appropriate classes;

Who is eligible for the course?

  • graduates in jazz from Italian conservatories and musical institutes, or from similarly accredited programmes abroad;
  • graduates in classical music from Italian conservatories and musical institutes, or from similarly accredited programmes abroad, with documented study and performance experience in jazz;
  • musicians without a music degree but with documented study and performance experience in jazz for at least four years.

Enrollment procedures

Candidates wishing to take part in the courses must first be accepted after completing the application procedure which requires that the following material be sent by traditional mail or via email:

    •  the application form;
    • recordings of three pieces chosen from three of the following struc- tures, Blues, Rhythm Changes, Standards, Modal Composition, other (by link on YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, WeTransfer, etc.);
    • passport-type digital photo to be sent via email (jpg format), renaming the file with the candidate’s name and surname (e.g., jane-doe.jpg);
    • receipt for application fee payment (if candidate is not accepted following completion of the application procedure, the application fee will be refunded within seven days).

Candidates with a diploma in jazz must furthermore send:

  •  a copy of the diploma or of the equivalent qualification;
  • documented certification of performance experience (concert posters, newspaper articles, etc.; in the absence of such documentation, candidates must write a letter attesting to their performance experience);

Candidates with a diploma in classical music must furthermore send:

  • a copy of the diploma or of the equivalent qualification;
  • documented certification of having studied jazz for at least three years;
  • documented certification of performance experience (concert posters, newspaper articles, etc.; in the absence of such documentation, candidates must write a letter attesting to their performance experience);

Candidates without a diploma in jazz or in classical music must furthermore send:

  • documented certification of having studied music for at least four years;
  • documented certification of having studied jazz for at least three years;
  • documented certification of at least three years of performance experience (concert posters, newspaper articles, etc.; in the absence of such documentation, candidates must write a letter attesting to their performance experience).

Candidates who wish to enroll as auditors to the course must send:

  • application form;
  • passport-type digital photo to be sent via email (jpg format), renaming the file with the candidate’s name and surname (e.g., jane-doe.jpg);
  • receipt for the payment of the relevant application

 

Requirements for the recording of audio tracks:

  • first and last name of the candidate and title of piece performed must all be written in the filename; should the candidate opt to send a piece of his or her own choosing, please enclose the score;
  • record three pieces chosen from among the following structures:

BLUES

(e.g., C-Jam Blues, Sandu, etc.)

RHYTHM CHANGES

(e.g., I’ve Got Rhythm, Scrapple from the Apple, etc.)

STANDARDS

(e.g., Body and Soul, Stella by Starlight, etc.)

MODAL COMPOSITION

(e.g., So What, El Gaucho, etc.)

OTHER

(a piece of the candidate’s own choosing, score to be enclosed as well)

Each piece must run for no longer than 4 minutes; recordings must be of good quality; recordings made over backing tracks are also acceptable, provided that the following elements are made clear: the accompaniment, the performance of themes and the solos. Material sent in will not be returned

SOLO RECORDINGS WITHOUT ACCOMPANIMENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED (E.G., PIANO SOLOS, ETC.)


Lodgings and Accommodation

Guest houses: a contact list for lodgings and rooms for rent;

Student dormitory: a limited number of beds are available in residential buildings within the city centre and in the immediate environs of the town itself.

Food

At the start of the summer seminars, a list will be handed out containing a variety of cooperating eateries such as restaurants, trattorias, bars and dining halls.

Worthy of Special Note:

Classroom 22 – Computer laboratory offering 12 multimedia stations which may be used for individual practice of guitar and electric bass, computer stations, with headphones, can be reserved on a daily basis at the administrative office.


Siena Jazz has created a health protocol that is at once highly detailed and very strict so as to increase the level of safety as much as possible for students, teachers and administrative staff. As a result, we will all be able to devote ourselves calmly and happily to the music we love. Every morning all areas will be sanitized; bathrooms will be sanitized twice a day. Classrooms are equipped with 80 polycarbonate panels that are 2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide. The use of facemasks is mandatory; so, too, are distancing of at least 1 metre and the use of disinfectants on hands and musical instruments. Personnel will check to ensure that all safety measures are carried out.

Fees, and Payment

  • The price of the complete course is € 800.00;
  • The price of the course for auditors is € 250.00.

Payment may be made through the NettunoPA Portal or via PayPal through the designated section of the site (plus consequent bank commission fees).
