Siena jazz Foundation It is a non-profit cultural Institute, founded on september 9th,1977, reconstituted into an Association, part public, part private on novembre 20th,1991.On the 18th of Novembre 2005, Siena Jazz was transformed into a Foundation called: “Siena Jazz - Accademia Nazionale del jazz”.
From its birth, Siena jazz has distinguished itself for developing its activity into didactics, production and research for jazz music and its quality contemporary derivations.
The Siena jazz Foundation has maintained the same founding members, headquarters, directors and the same artistic project of the original Association. The three founding members remain: the Municipality of Siena, the Provincial Administration of Siena and the Sienese Jazz Association.
The Siena jazz Foundation has been entitled as formative agency, credited by Tuscan Region, with D.D.R.T n°1281 of 20-03-2006 and in October 2006 it has obtained the Quality System certification following UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 for the activity of Planning and distribution of music formation services, high level formation and international masters.
Siena Jazz has been recognized for years as a qualified didactic centre and a national reference for its perfectioning, high-level, professional formation courses and for supporting young neo-professional jazz and contemporary jazz musicians.
Siena jazz is one of the early members of the I.A.S.J. - International Association of Schools of Jazz, with its headquarters in Holland (The Hague) and proposes italian jazz in Europe and internationally, through the international Meetings of this Association, which includes the most important jazz schools in the world.
The operative headquarters is in the Medicean Fortress, in the center of Siena, where the foundation organizes its activity in a structure measuring over 1000 square meters with 20 classrooms equipped for teaching, an audio archive and library which constitutes the Centro nazionale studi sul jazz "Arrigo Polillo" , as a research section of the Foundation. During the summer Workshops the didactic structure is enriched with other 700 square meters in classroom space (kindly lent), next to the main structure, making a total of 27 classrooms for the courses.
Siena jazz has always distinguished itself for developing its activity into three main sections: DIDACTICS, PRODUCTION and RESEARCH
Regarding didactics, Siena jazz has always developed its activities mainly towards musical perfection and high level courses creating in 1978 the Sienese workshops in jazz music. Since 1985, these workshops have been funded by the Department for Cultural Patrimony and recognised as national musical perfection courses. Since 1989 Siena Jazz has activated courses in musical formation for young jazz, blues, funky, fusion and rock musicians. Since 2003 Siena jazz besides organizes the permanent laboratory of high qualification musical research, a course made for a limited group of young professionals musicians, willing to specialise and enrich their own artistic and creative skills.
Regarding research Siena Jazz has prepared, with the collaboration of the “Arrigo Polillo”national study center on jazz, constituted in Siena on May 21st 1988 as a research sector, an audio archive and library that represents the most important national reference point for students, musicians and scholars in the field of research and documentation. The structure is Thoroughly computerized and it has got its own catalogue on the web. The study center guests the most important specialized collection of jazz in Italy. Nowadays the collection is one of the most important study research in the world, thanks to the 25.000 media supports archived. In the last few years important improvements has been made, thanks to the restructuring of the sound archive and the purchasing of analogic devices and tools for the audio and picture digital rendering.
Regarding production, Siena Jazz has helped more than 6000 musicians and hundreds of bands which have realized a lot of fundamental productions for their own artistic and professional research, thanks to the high qualification courses. Siena Jazz also realizes many concerts during festivals and meetings which take place during the year. Besides the Foundation now owns his personal label called Siena Jazz Records, in order to produce unedited musical projects, and Edizioni Siena Jazz for the publication of didactic and research operas.
