Special Masterclass with Enrico Rava

Siena Jazz will dedicate the Masterclass of its 45th International Summer Seminars to a selection of young professional and semi-professional musicians who play the following instruments:

  • trombone
  • saxophone
  • guitar
  • piano
  • double bass
  • drums

Enrollment opens on 9 March 2015. The method of participation in this Masterclass will be the same as that of the International Summer Seminar: 4 hours per day, for 3 days from August 1st – 3rd. Enrico Rava will conduct and play along with the group as ensemble leader.

A commission will evaluate the candidates, the ultimate selection of whom will be based on the documentation submitted by the candidates themselves.

The decisions of the Commission are final and irrevocable.

A declaration of acceptance of the regulations of Siena Jazz’s 45th International Summer Seminars must be sent in along with the other material submitted by candidates as part of the application and selection process.

Course participants will have the opportunity to take part as auditors in lessons held during the second part of the Courses, from August 2-7.

Enrollment

Candidates wishing to take part in the courses must first be accepted after completing the application procedure which requires that the following material be sent:

-  application form;

- recordings of three pieces chosen from three of the following categories:

BLUES, RHYTHM CHANGES, STANDARDS, MODAL COMPOSITIONOTHER;

- a passport-type digital photo (jpg format)—the file’s name should specify the student’s first and last name (e.g., mario-rossi.jpg);

- receipt for the payment of the application fee.

Candidates with a diploma in jazz must furthermore send:

- a copy of the diploma or of the equivalent qualification;

- documented certification of performance experience (concert posters, newspaper articles, etc.—in the absence of such documentation, candidates must write a letter attesting to their performance experience);

Candidates with a diploma in classical music must furthermore send:

- a copy of the diploma or of the equivalent qualification;

- documented certification of having studied jazz for at least three years;

- documented certification of performance experience (concert posters, newspaper articles, etc.—in the absence of such documentation, candidates must write a letter attesting to their performance experience);

Candidates without a diploma in jazz or in classical music must furthermore send:

- documented certification of having studied music for at least four years;

- documented certification of having studied jazz for at least three years;

- documented certification of at least three years of performance experience (concert posters, newspaper articles, etc.—in the absence of such documentation, candidates must write a letter attesting to their performance experience).

Requirements for the Recording of the CD:

the first and last name of the candidate, the instrument played, and a list of pieces performed must all be written on the CD itself;
– enclose the score, should the candidate opt to send a piece of his or her own choosing;
– record three pieces chosen from among the following categories:

BLUES
(e.g., C-Jam Blues, Sandu, etc.)

RHYTHM CHANGES
(e.g., I’ve Got Rhythm, Scrapple From The Apple, etc.)

STANDARDS
(e.g., Body and Soul, Stella By Starlight, etc.)

MODAL COMPOSITION
(e.g., So What, El Gaucho, etc.)

OTHER
(a piece of the candidate’s own choosing—score to be enclosed as well)

- each piece must run for no longer than 4 minutes; recordings must be of good quality; recordings made over backing tracks are also acceptable, provided that the following elements are made clear: the accompaniment, the performance of themes and the improvised passages;

sent material will not be returned to the candidate.

The price of the Masterclass is € 300,00;

Lodgings and accommodation

To telephone our hospitality services, dial our offices at +39 0577 271401, then press 2 on the automated menu. Two types of accommodation are available:

- Guest houses (“affittacamere”) — a contact list for lodgings and rooms for rent;

- Student dormitory (“Casa dello Studente”) — a limited number of beds are available in residential buildings within the city centre and in the immediate environs of the town itself.

At the start of the summer workshops, a list will be handed out containing a variety of eateries such as ristoranti, trattorie, bars and university refectories.
